The year behind you
A Finish Date a year that was already filed
The return went out last spring, and the months after it never got a day. Catching the books up and reopening a return are two different yeses. The paper has to say which one you bought.
Filed means the return left
If the return for a year has already been sent, that year has a story the government already has. Changing the books under it does not, by itself, change that story. Someone has to decide to amend, or to leave the return and let the books catch up only from the open months forward.
Owners often discover the difference in the middle of a cleanup, when a deposit from last spring is still sitting in the wrong place. The temptation is to fix the books and assume the return will follow. It will not follow unless that decision is written down.
Left alone is a complete answer
Leaving the filed year alone is not a failure. It is often the right scope. The open months get a real tie. The filed year stays as it was sent. The named day then means current from the first open month through that day, and it does not mean the old return was rebuilt.
The paper should say left alone in words a preparer can see. Otherwise the next person to open the file will think the silence meant amend, and will either do work you did not buy or scold you for a change that was never promised.
Amending is its own project
If the filed year has to move, that is a second project with its own reason. A missed form, a deposit called income that was a loan, an owner draw called an expense. The reason belongs in a sentence, not in a shrug. The day for the open months can still stand while that second project is scoped.
We will not bury an amendment inside a cleanup to make the proposal look smaller. You should be able to say no to the amendment and still yes to the open months. Those are different reliefs.
What the return can use
A return that has not been filed yet can use the named day, if the day is real. That is the ordinary path. The books through that day are the books the return is built from. A return built earlier, on a feed, is the thing we are trying not to repeat.
If your preparer is someone else, the list of what the day made true is what you hand them. Not a login and a hope. The handoff is a month they can open, with the differences already named.

Say whether a year was already filed.
A return already went in, and I need to know if the day reopens it.
You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.
