Day or year

A Finish Date does the day include a whole year

A preparer asked if the year is ready, and the day only covers the open months. Through a Tuesday is not the same sentence as the year is ready. People buy one and receive a speech about the other.

Read the difference

Hold the day

A day covers the open stretch

Most of the time the project runs from the oldest open month through the named day. That stretch might be six weeks. It might be nine months. It is not automatically a calendar year, and it is not automatically the year on the tax return. It is the stretch that was open.

If January through the prior close was already tied, we do not retie it for theater. We read enough to trust the starting balances, and we spend the work on what is actually open. Theater is how a short pile becomes an expensive one.

A year ready for a return is a second sentence

A return wants a year that holds together. Income named correctly. Balance sheet accounts that exist for a reason. Owner pay decided, not smoothed. Payroll activity sitting where the forms will look for it. That readiness can use the named day, and it is still a further yes if the day only promised a tie.

We split the sentences so you can buy the tie now and the return when the tie is real. Bundling them in the proposal is how a return gets drafted on a month that was never finished.

Partial years and odd starts

A company that began in May does not have a January. A company that changed its method has a seam. The paper should say where the year starts for this file, in ordinary words. We will not paste a standard year on top of a short life and call the missing months zero without looking.

If a prior preparer closed a year you do not trust, say so. Distrust can put months back on the list. It should not, by itself, put the entire history of the company on the list. Scope is a kindness.

Ask the question in those words

Does this day include a year, or does it include the open months through a day. You are allowed to ask it before you sign. If the answer is a blend, make the blend into two lines. Blends are where fees and expectations go to argue.

The page on a year already filed is the companion to this one. One asks whether the past return moves. This one asks whether the open work is a year or a stretch. They are neighbors, and they are not the same door.

Open a time

Ask whether you are buying a year.

I need to know if the day means a whole year or only the open months.
