A Finish Date
A calendar page with one Friday still open for a choice

Still this year

A Finish Date October after the named day

October is on the calendar and the estimate is still a guess. By October the filed year is visible, and a few choices on that year have not closed yet. A day that lands then is doing two jobs.

Hold the day

The year is visible

By October an owner can feel the year. The busy season has a shape. The slow months have a shape. A set of books that is current through a day in October lets you look at profit without narrating it from the bank app. That look is the point of the day, not a souvenir of it.

If the books are still open in October, the look is a guess, and the choices you make on top of the guess are guesses too. Equipment, a retirement contribution, the timing of a bill. Each one deserves a number you can stand on.

What can still be chosen

Federal estimated payments follow a calendar that is the same in every state. The fall is when owners notice the third one has passed and the last one is still ahead, in January for a calendar-year filer. A current set of books does not file that payment for you. It tells you whether the year you are estimating is the year you actually had.

Retirement contributions and equipment placed in service have their own rules, and those rules live in the instructions, not in a slogan. What this page will say is simpler. You cannot choose well from a month that has not met the bank. The named day is what makes the choice real.

The return conversation starts here

A return decided in the fall is a calmer return than one assembled in March from a feed. October is a natural month for that conversation, if the day is real. If the day is still a hope, the conversation is theater.

We will sit in that conversation with the statements the day produced. Not with a promise that the books are basically fine. Basically fine is how open items survive into the next year.

If your day is not in October

A day in June or a day in January is still a day. October is not magic. It is just the month when the overlap between a finished catch-up and a year you can still steer is easiest to see. If your lender named a different month, that month is the one on the paper.

Do not wait for October out of superstition if the months are already too many. The count beats the season. Name the oldest open month, and let the day be the one the count can hold.

I want the books usable in October, while the year can still be steered.
